Why Is Instagram Removing Sex-Positive Accounts?
Instagram has been spring cleaning too hard, and in the process has banned a number of sex positive Instagram pages, including Gasm.Life and Club Verboten’s pages.
This spring cleaning is leaving many brands devastated and answerless with the lack of warning and advice on their platform bans. But these are only two of over 45 accounts that have been taken down off Instagram in the recent weeks. This is apparently due to users posting sex related content ranging from sex-positive accounts to fetish party organisations posting about the latest events.
A spokesperson for Meta said ‘We understand our platforms play an important role in helping people express themselves and connect with communities. While we allow sex positive content and discussion, we have rules in place around nudity and sexual solicitation to ensure content is appropriate for everyone, particularly young people. A number of the accounts brought to our attention were removed in error and have been reinstated’.
This is part of a string of incidences that are pushing sex workers and adult content creators out of the social narrative. Discrimination and online abuse are daily occurrences for those making sex positive content on social media, and this push of removals by Instagram is not offering support for accounts that feature sex workers or sex positive content.
