BON CHARGE PEMF Mat Mini review: the little heated mat my back keeps asking for

Nothing’s new £349 headphones sound brilliant, but will they fit in your handbag?

Nothing's new £349 headphones sound incredible, but good luck fitting them in your handbag. Here's my honest take on the Headphone (1) Pro.

Crystals, infrared heat, red light and PEMF frequencies in one compact mat? I tried BON CHARGE’s £299 Mini to see whether it would earn a place in my recovery routine.

I spend more time sitting in bed with my laptop than my back would like. I also have scoliosis, so after a long stretch of work, getting comfortable can become a project in itself. The BON CHARGE Infrared PEMF Mat Mini has become something I reach for when that happens.

The Mini combines adjustable heat with pulsed electromagnetic fields, or PEMF, as well as red and near-infrared light. BON CHARGE says the mat is designed to support relaxation, circulation and recovery. It also contains crystals and gemstones, which are honestly one of my favourite things about it. I think they’re beautiful, and they make the mat feel like a lovely wellness purchase rather than just another piece of equipment. I’m not relying on the crystals to fix my back; I simply enjoy that they’re there.

The mat itself makes a good first impression. It feels sturdy and well built, yet it’s compact enough to position behind my back while I’m sitting. It also comes with a nice carry bag, so it’s easy to put away or take with me. That matters with wellness devices: if something is awkward to move or store, I’m much less likely to use it.

The heat is the feature I keep coming back for. When my back aches after too much time sitting in bed, I can settle against the Mini and feel the warmth where I want it. It’s been particularly soothing for the tension I experience with scoliosis, and I feel more comfortable after a session.

I’ve also noticed something I didn’t expect: my vertigo has felt less pronounced after using it on some occasions. I need to spend more time with the mat to see whether that continues, and I wouldn’t say it treats vertigo. It’s simply part of how I’ve felt so far.

My main frustration is the remote controller. I find the different modes confusing, it beeps rather enthusiastically whenever I press a button, and I’m not always entirely sure which setting I’ve managed to turn on. It’s a shame, because the mat feels thoughtfully made, while operating it can feel like a tiny guessing game. Clearer controls would make the whole experience more relaxing.

That uncertainty also makes it difficult for me to judge the PEMF frequencies. BON CHARGE offers settings between 1 and 30 Hz for different wellness goals, but I can’t feel a frequency working in the same obvious way I can feel the heat. I know that I enjoy using the mat and feel better afterwards. I can’t confidently say which part of the technology is responsible, and I’d need to try it for longer before drawing conclusions about lasting benefits.

At £299, the Mini is a considered purchase, especially if you’re hoping for a measurable result from PEMF alone. But as a compact, beautifully made mat that helps me slow down and soothe an aching back, I really like it. The crystals are gorgeous, the heat feels wonderful, and the carry bag makes it pleasantly easy to live with. If BON CHARGE could make the controller as intuitive as the rest of the product, I’d love it even more.

My verdict: the Mini has earned its spot in my recovery routine. I’m looking forward to seeing how I feel with longer-term use, once I’ve worked out which mode I’m actually on.
